By eating a meal that includes all three macronutrients we are able to better balance our blood sugar levels (BSL).⠀
These macronutrients are: carbohydrates, proteins and fats.⠀
If our BSL are out of balance we can experience fatigue, sugar cravings, a tendency to overeat, brain fog and mood swings amongst other symptoms; a BSL imbalance may also affect our reproductive and stress hormones. Dramatic highs and lows in BSL may lead to metabolic syndrome which can increase the risk of developing diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. ⠀
Another benefit of ensuring we eat all three macronutrients is the increased likelihood that we will consume a larger number of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and antioxidants) that are required for health.
There are a number of different diets that glorify a particular macronutrient over one or another, but for a healthy diet there is a need for a balance of each macronutrient. Carbohydrates are not sinful, fats are not wicked and there is such a thing as too much protein.
